We had a day of true Sabbath on this campus yesterday as nearly 20 people gathered for a Lenten Quiet Day. From 10 till 5, we prayed together, ate together, meditated, daydreamed, studied, and rested….all in silence. It was a lovely experience and offered a taste of what Sabbath rest was like in Jesus’ day.

Whatever we were born with, whatever gifts or talents, whatever struggles or impediments, whatever structures of privilege or structures of poverty we have inherited, this is enough to move us toward salvation. By the standards of the world inheritances are not equal; but in the eyes of God, whatever we are given is equally capable of bringing us salvation. We have what we have been given at birth to be used to move us toward God. It is enough… but the choice is ours.

Still, I wonder if there is some way as a Christian community we can’t model for our children a better way of living in a world of material abundance. If we don’t, who will? Nothing on the Disney Channel or social media or billboards or the web is telling them “Happy is enough; happy is less.”
Psalm 51, I must admit is one of my favorites, but as much through association as content. You see, it is the Psalm appointed for Friday morning prayers in the Hour by Hour prayer book that so many of us use.
There was a Friday morning Minyan for a while, that the now deceased yet still deeply beloved Charley Bush was part of. Every time, and I mean every time, we got to verse 6, Charley would give an audible “Uggh” or “Give me a break.”

She is deeply stooped over, bent nearly in half, and she has walked through life this way for 18 years. Imagine her experience of the world. What has her posture made her unable to see and experience as others do? What facial expressions has she missed? What views of the world have escaped her?

It feels awkward to talk about money and yet, Jesus talked about it all the time both directly and indirectly. I didn’t count myself, but found this fact in an article that one out of every ten verses in the gospels is about “stuff” – the human quest for treasure. I don’t doubt it and know that our culture depends on this perpetual quest. In times of broad economic insecurity, we are encouraged to spend more money, to stimulate the economy. The next best thing is always out there and we want it.

“After these things” are the first words we hear in today’s reading from the book of Revelation. “After these things” are words that now adequately describe our life after bombs have gone off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

The day is lovely. It couldn’t be more perfect. Jesus turns to Peter, and sweeping his hand across all of these things, asks the most beautiful, powerful question in scripture, “Do you love me more than these?” Do you love me more than these? It is a question that I invite you to consider today as we consider the life of Peter.
