Standing for love in sorrowful places

By Holly Boone

Haiti. Gaza. Ukraine. Isn’t it remarkable that in some of the worst theaters of human suffering today, Epiphany is there, standing for love?

I use that phrase because that was AFEDJ’s theme of its spring fundraising campaign: Standing for Love: Transforming Lives in the Holy Land. I am pleased and deeply grateful that Epiphany contributed $15,000 to that campaign. And $10,000 to the Haiti Micah Project for destitute street children. And $25,000 to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for humanitarian help for the people of Ukraine.

Our gifts are not only money, although without question that money provides life-saving and life-giving help for people caught in one form or another of unholy human savagery. What our financial gifts also offer to those suffering that savagery is proof that somewhere in the world, someone thinks of them, cares for them, with kindness and love.

At many Epiphany events you’ve probably seen the red aprons stitched with “Epiphany is here!” I’m glad those aprons are being worn by Epiphany volunteers at so many places in Seattle—at Teen Feed, Ronald McDonald House, Operation Nightwatch, and Angeline’s Day Center for Women. Those aprons and the people who wear them stand for love, too.

Isn’t it wonderful that Epiphany can stand for love here and there, in Haiti, Gaza, and Ukraine?

Celebrate with the graduates in Guatemala this November

Do you enjoy traveling well off the beaten path? Want to learn more about Epiphany‘s support of a small school for Mayan youth in Guatemala? Travel with us November 6 – 17 to attend graduation ceremonies at Nicolás Christian School in the beautiful Ixil region of the Guatemalan highlands. Trips usually include a few days in Antigua, a World Heritage Site. All of us who have traveled to the Ixil can tell you it is a life-changing experience. To learn more, contact Holly at brausboone@msn.com. Travelers must be confirmed September 1.

Last year Ann Beck, Margaret Petersen, Amanda Eap and Holly Boone attended the graduation and had a great time. Check out our travelogue.

Thanks from Teen Feed

By Ann Beck

A few weeks ago, I got an email from Janine Kennedy, Acting Executive Director of Teen Feed. We had sent Teen Feed $5,000 in April to useUnnamed (6) as matching funds to help spur giving at Give Big. Apparently, it worked! Here’s her message of thanks to all of us at Epiphany.

Ann, I keep marking time on my calendar that gets consumed to CALL you PERSONALLY, not only to say THANK YOU for the generous matching gift this month from Epiphany for GiveBig—it helped us make what we thought would be $10,000 turn into $25,000 in support for kids! It also assisted us with an extra bump to get staff and volunteers certified in CPR + First Aid in service of those youth at risk of emergency intervention. The peace of mind you allowed was incredible knowing we are in readiness to serve. I’m enclosing a picture of our post-training silliness. Thank you for your continued partnership!
