Harrowing Of Hell

Possessions: Burden or Blessing?

April 12, 2015, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching.

Just as Spring is a good time for a deep clean, a de-cluttering of the stuff in your life, the Fifty Days of Easter are an excellent time for a de-cluttering of your Spirit. Reflect upon this honestly. In what ways do the possessions in your life weigh you down and get in the way of your relationship with the resurrected Jesus?

Resurrection: Connection and Love

April 5, 2015, The Rev. Doyt L. Conn, Jr.

Resurrection is about connection; a connection that can’t be proven; it can only be owned and accepted and believed if indeed we want to know the love of God. And I can tell you this: it is worth it. It is so worth it. You want to know why so many people believe in the resurrection because the connection to the love of God is worth it!

Good Friday 2015: Obstacles Along the Pilgrim’s Road

April 3, 2015, The Rev. Doyt L. Conn, Jr. preaching

On Good Friday we meet Jesus in the middle of his pilgrimage. And along the way we meet the friends, and foes, and strangers that he meets. We watch him walk by them, past friends, past foes, past strangers always staying on the pilgrim’s path, always moving toward God.

Maundy Thursday 2015: Pilgrimage

April 2, 2015, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

“Christian pilgrimage can and should be a walk with Jesus. And that is necessarily a walk in kingdom territory, under those upside-down kingdom rules. The pilgrim road is a physical peninsula of the kingdom. As the kingdom sprang up around the sandals of Jesus, so kingdom flowers can spring up around pilgrim boots.”

Holy Monday 2015: Fear of Missing Out

March 30, 2015, Elizabeth Walker preaching

In tonight’s Gospel, we hear about Mary and Martha welcoming Jesus into their home after Jesus raised their brother Lazarus from the dead. It is a celebratory gathering, as you might expect, in the wake of a family member’s resurrection from death. But, as would be expected in a Gospel that kicks off Holy Week, there is an element of gravity too; Judas questions the actions of Mary, who showed ultimate respect for Jesus by washing his feet—with her hair—using expensive perfume.

What to Do When Your Soul Is Troubled

March 22, 2015, The Rev. Doyt L. Conn, Jr., preaching

A troubled soul is an invitation for healing and that is what we are going to talk about today. A troubled soul is an invitation for healing whether it is a little bit of trouble, like a weird week, or a whole lot of trouble, like heading toward the cross. Jesus knew both extremes because he was human, just like you and me. Whether it was a weird week or a final walk, the response to a troubled soul is the same. Jesus shows us in the Gospel, models for us, and teaches us how to manage in those times when our soul is troubled.

Evening Prayer Homily: Real Joy

March 18, 2015, Jonathan Roberts preaching

Joy: what it is, what it’s pulling us toward, and how to experience more of it
