Harrowing Of Hell

Day 8 – The Great Vigil of Easter

March 30, 2013, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

The journey from the tomb to Resurrection is one that invites us to move from darkness to light. The Resurrection happened once, but it also happens over and over again as we match the rhythms of our life with the permanence of the Resurrection.

It is Finished

March 29, 2013, The Rev Kate Wesch preaching

It is finished. He is dead. Any way you look at it; Jesus has gone forth to another space. You can check to see if he’s still breathing, feel for a pulse, see if the warmth has gone out of his body, or even stick a spear in his side. He is dead. The struggle is over, and the last words he said were, “It is finished.”

Maundy Thursday 2013

March 28, 2013, The Rev Kate Wesch preaching

On this one night of the year, we remember in our words and actions, a most dramatic and pivotal moment in scripture. The night Jesus gathered at table with his disciples for a final meal and once again re-ordered the structures of power through simple, – profound acts.

Spiritual Friendship

March 17, 2013, The Rev Conn preaching

What we believe as Christians is that we are beloved and we are eternal, and so is everyone else. But just knowing this is not enough to unveil the deep joy that God has in mind for us. Which is why we are Christians. Which is why we advocate for Christianity. Christianity’s purpose is to bring joy into being in fellowship with those who walk this journey of belovedness and eternity with us.

EULOGY FOR CHARLEY BUSH

March 16, 2013, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

I consider it a great privilege to stand here and remember our friend Charley Bush on behalf of the community. It is a humbling challenge because I know for certain that if each one of us came forward today and spoke for an hour on the life of Charley Bush we still wouldn’t do justice to this most magnificent man.

Reconciled with God

March 10, 2013, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

The Prodigal son is a story about balance and the deep desire to have balance in one’s life. I know what that feels like. Sometimes things seem a little out of balance. I don’t sleep enough, or eat right, or play enough with the dog. All of which may be true, but none of which Paul is taking about when he talks about reconciliation with God.

Repent!

March 3, 2013, The Rev Kate Wesch preaching

What Jesus does do is call people to repentance! Yet, this is where it gets tricky. Having rescued us from the notion of a “God who pulls the strings” and “works good things for the good and bad things for the bad,” it is tempting to use repentance as a way to re-enter that “prison we know.” We are tempted to view repentance as that act which resets the ideology back to its default.

Anxiety, Monotheism, and the Story of Abraham

February 24, 2013, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

We start off the Old Testament reading today in a swirl of anxiety. The story of Abraham begins with the phrase “After these things,” which indicates to us a lack of clarity around something that has just happened, and a measure of uncertainty about how to move forward. “After these things” is our equivalent to, “What was that all about?”

Sitting with Ourselves in the Wilderness

February 17, 2013, The Rev Kate Wesch preaching

Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday. About 100 of us gathered here in this place to meditate on how God sees us, what it means to enter a season of penitence and fasting, and to spend some moments embracing our mortality. The ashes smeared on our foreheads in the sign of the cross are such a visceral, earthy and outward sign of that mortality.
