Experiencing Holy Week Online

Holy Week offers an opportunity for us engage with this most sacred season as Jesus journeys to the Cross and Resurrection. Epiphany will be streaming all major liturgies of Holy Week as well as offering unique, online-only options for our distanced parish. Below you will find a description of each service and a few things that you might want to have with you to make the experience more meaningful online, by makin our spaces sacred with intention. We hope that you are able to experience the holy while celebrating with us online.

Preparing the Worship Space

Decide where you will hold your service. Whether you are in your living room, bedroom, office, or outside, make sure the worship space is free of distractions. Consider putting a piece of art in your worship space. Dim the lights and get comfortable so that you can fully experience these times of reflection and meaning.

Palm Sunday | YouTube Live | 8:45 & 11:00 am
Choral Evensong | YouTube Live | 5:30 pm

Palm Sunday remembers when Christ rode into Jerusalem and was greeted with great celebration. People placed palms on the ground before him shouting Hosanna. Palm branches were considered symbols of victory and triumph. Go out into your yard. Do you see any branches that you could bring inside for the service? Find something that you can wave as we have the palm procession.

Tenebrae Worship Service | YouTube Live | 7:30 pm

Tenebrae is an ancient service that increases in darkness by gradually extinguishing candles to symbolize the coming darkness of Jesus’ death. For this service, assemble seven candles. If you don’t have seven candles, you can use one and relight it after each extinguishing.  Sit is a fairly dark room. Each time the church extinguishes a candle, extinguish one of your candles. The final candle is not extinguished but removed from the room. For those of us at home, we will extinguish the final candle as the final candle is being removed from the church.

Maundy Thursday | YouTube Live | 7:30 pm
Can You Watch With Me Just One Hour Vigil | Zoom | 9:00pm – 6:00am

On Maundy Thursday, we remember the Last Supper. Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. Each Maundy Thursday, we have a foot washing ceremony. At home, you can gather a basin and towel to wash each other’s feet or you might find a nice hand lotion and gently apply and massage it on the hands of either the person with you or on yourself. Jesus washed the disciple’s feet to show them how to show humility and service. Whether you use a basin or lotion, indulge in a sense of service and humility to those with you. If you are watching alone, as you wash your hands or feet, pray “Lord, thank you for these hands and feet that can serve you. Help me to walk in humility and be your servant.”

We will have a prayer vigil on Zoom starting 9:00 pm on Thursday until 6:00 am on Friday. The Zoom will be open for people to drop in and out of all night. Each hour, we will have scripture reading, meditation, and prayer. We want to have at least one person praying each hour. Sign up hereIf you are willing to read a scripture or meditation, you can sign up here.

Easter Sunday | YouTube Live | 8:45 am
Choral Evensong | YouTube Live | 5:30 pm

Celebrate the resurrection of Jesus! For this service, set some fresh flowers, grab a bell (might be on your cellphone). We will ring the bells during the proclamation of Easter when we sing Jesus Christ is Risen Today and during the refrain of I am the Bread of Life. You might also want to have a small bowl of water to use when we remember our baptismal promises.
