Harrowing Of Hell

Armstrong, Wilberforce, and Character Formation

October 28, 2012, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

I said recently from this pulpit that “God is good,” to which you responded, “All the time.” “All the time,” “God is good.” And I believe this. I believe this for many reasons, but chiefly today because we have been running a sermon series on character, and Lance Armstrong has entered the picture, leaving, I might add, seven blank slots in the Tour de France record books.

“It’ll Be Okay”

October 21, 2012 The Rev Kate Wesch preaching

Change unnerves me. I just don’t like it. When something big, life altering is going to happen, I like to sit with it for a while and mull it over.

Salted by Fire

October 14, 2012, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

This Sunday we have guests from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and I am glad they are here. Their timing is perfect for highlighting the message from our Gospel.

St Francis

October 7, 2012 The Rev Kate Wesch preaching

One cold, wintry day Francis was traveling on foot with Brother Leo, one of his closest friends, to Santa Maria degli Angeli. Knowing that Leo was bothered by the cold and the freezing rain falling on them, Francis said, “Leo, although we may give sight to the blind, cause the deaf to hear, and even raise the dead – these things are not the source of perfect joy.”

God is Good

September 30, 2012, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

God is good. I know this first hand. After all, last Sunday it was Kate, not me, who had to preach on the Proverb text “Ode to a Capable Wife.”

Ode to Character and a Woman of Worth

September 23, 2012, The Reverend Kate Wesch preaching.

A headline from the Wall Street Journal caught my eye the other day. It read, “Opting Out of the ‘Rug Rat Race’.” The article itself was adapted by Paul Tough, the author of a new book to summarize its main point, namely that modern parenting is structured to produce exceptional cognitive skills in children, but not character.

The Nature of the Christian

September 16, 2012, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching.

In 1933 Adolf Hitler passed the Enabling Act which boycotted Jewish owned stores throughout Germany. On the day the law was enacted Julia Bonheoffer, the 90 year old grandmother of Dietrich Bonheoffer, went shoppingwhere she always went shopping because that is where she shopped.

King Frank and Character Formation

September 9, 2012, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

I met a man this summer named Frank. He was a king and a London Cabbie and the year was 1900. It was the year that Frank’s life took an abrupt turn, beginning one day when his cab was hailed by a man and a strange woman, who requested he drive them to several places in London. One was a restaurant, the other a jewelry store, both of which the lady robbed. At some point, she hijacked the cab itself, ousting Frank. By this time, several policemen and storeowners were in angry pursuit. Frank joined them, trying to save his anxious horse, Strawberry.

Casting Out Satan

September 2, 2012, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

It’s not often we hear Onward Christian Soldiers.

This song came up at the hymn sing Tom Foster led two Sunday’s back in the Great Hall; which gave Tom, Kate, Diane and myself cause to reflect on it during liturgy meeting. I pulled out the Hymnal and took a good look at the words.
