Harrowing Of Hell

Creation in The Saint John’s Bible

September 22, 2013, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

In what ways do you see the perpetuation of God’s creation unfolding in your own life?

Mercy and a Stone in the Pond

Psalm 51, I must admit is one of my favorites, but as much through association as content. You see, it is the Psalm appointed for Friday morning prayers in the Hour by Hour prayer book that so many of us use.

There was a Friday morning Minyan for a while, that the now deceased yet still deeply beloved Charley Bush was part of. Every time, and I mean every time, we got to verse 6, Charley would give an audible “Uggh” or “Give me a break.”

Ambassadors in the Kingdom of God

September 9, 2013, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

The word in Greek here is miseo, which means: “to love less.” Why it is translated as “hate” I have no idea. The statement can be better understood to read, “you can’t be my disciple if you don’t love your parents and children and spouse and sibling and even yourself less than you love God.”

Friendship and Mutuality

September 1, 2013, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

God is always near, this near, in fact, but people who ignore God or pretend God isn’t real, or even believe God isn’t real, can’t know friendship with God. It requires mutuality, and if there is no mutuality, it is as if God isn’t there.

Healing of the Bent Woman

August 25, 2013, Charissa Bradstreet preaching

She is deeply stooped over, bent nearly in half, and she has walked through life this way for 18 years. Imagine her experience of the world. What has her posture made her unable to see and experience as others do? What facial expressions has she missed? What views of the world have escaped her?

We Are Heirs of the Kingdom of God

August 18, 2013, The Rev Doyt Conn preaching

The sermon today is about the lavish, outrageous, abundant, overflowing love God has for us. It is a sermon about what it means to be a child of God, and why that matters. It is a sermon to remind us of our divine family resemblance, and the duty that puts upon us, and joy that this bring us when we act as heirs of God’s kingdom.

Faith – “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”.

August 11, 2013, Ben Linder preaching

Faith is an interesting word. According to the reading in Hebrews today, it is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”. I immediately thought of Indiana Jones taking a deep breath and stepping out into nothingness in his search for the Holy Grail. And for a lot of folks, faith can be just that scary. When I was a child I had faith that my parents would provide me food, shelter, clothing, and love. Later in life, I had faith in my friends to be loyal and honest with me, and for the most part, I was not let down.

How to be rich towards God

August 4, 2013, The Rev Kate Wesch preaching

It feels awkward to talk about money and yet, Jesus talked about it all the time both directly and indirectly. I didn’t count myself, but found this fact in an article that one out of every ten verses in the gospels is about “stuff” – the human quest for treasure. I don’t doubt it and know that our culture depends on this perpetual quest. In times of broad economic insecurity, we are encouraged to spend more money, to stimulate the economy. The next best thing is always out there and we want it.
