Harrowing Of Hell

Give Joy

December 1, 2013, Holly Boone, Epiphany parishioner preacher

Still, I wonder if there is some way as a Christian community we can’t model for our children a better way of living in a world of material abundance. If we don’t, who will? Nothing on the Disney Channel or social media or billboards or the web is telling them “Happy is enough; happy is less.”

People of the Flood or People of Mercy and Grace?

November 24, 2013, Charissa Bradstreet, MDiv preaching

In the midst of fresh disappointments and irritations, and even in the midst of large injustices, shall we be a people of the flood or a people captivated and transformed by mercy and grace?

Ark of Mercy

November 17, 2013, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

Today we have the Noah story and I’d like to start by stating I believe this is a story of mercy.

Stewardship Witness

November 10, 2013, Epiphany parishioner, Wellesley Chapman preaching
Look around and you can see the product of creative impulse here at Epiphany. In addition to the visual art you see everywhere, we have music: two organs, pianos, a harpsichord, a talented choir and a superb musical direction. Everywhere you look, you will find some one or some group expressing their faith and their struggle. We gather in groups to study, to pray, meditate, share a meal and to and serve others. We gather around the ornate the Saint John’s Bible and ask hard questions of one another.

The Awesomeness of Kindness

November 3, 2013, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

At Epiphany we often talk about operating principles that give us insight into the world as God made it. Gravity is an operating principle; so is the principle of water evaporation; as is the principle of the stone in the pond (if you don’t know what that is you can listen to last week’s sermon here).

This week I’d like to introduce two other operating principles that may help us become kinder people. The first is the operating principle of “ick” and the second is the operating principle of “awesomeness.” They are both pretty simple and they both have to do with kindness.

Cain, Abel, and Envy

October 27, 2013, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

Envy may well be the first temptation we encounter in life. Observe a child. Even in the nursery we see envy, as a toy or a snack is snatched from the hands of the other, even when it is the same toy or snack the child is holding himself. The child reaches to grab what he wants, and the other cries out, and relationship is tested and challenged and in some cases broken; which is why envy is a crime in the kingdom of God, where relationship is primary, and that which causes brothers to brawl is contrary to the world as God made it.

Persistence in God’s Kingdom

Preacher: The Rev. Kate Wesch Genesis 3:13b-24 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.”  14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon

Where are you?

October 13, 2013, The Rev. Doyt Conn

There is a moment after all that, when God, walking in the Garden in the cool of the evening, calls out: “Where are you?”

God Creates Humanity

October 6, 2013, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

This morning, we got to hear the second version of the creation story from Genesis. Over the past two weeks, we heard the first version, “In the beginning, God created…and it was good — on the second day, God created….and it was good.” These two accounts come from different sources and different times, but for some reason, they ended up side by side in this narrative.
