Harrowing Of Hell

Being Born Again

March 16, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

Whatever we were born with, whatever gifts or talents, whatever struggles or impediments, whatever structures of privilege or structures of poverty we have inherited, this is enough to move us toward salvation. By the standards of the world inheritances are not equal; but in the eyes of God, whatever we are given is equally capable of bringing us salvation. We have what we have been given at birth to be used to move us toward God. It is enough… but the choice is ours.

Audience of One

March 9, 2014, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

From now until Easter, we are invited into the holy season of Lent. That means turning inward and intentionally working on being the person God wants you to be.

Ash Wednesday Sermon

March 5, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

Has it ever happened that someone has had the wrong impression about you? Have you ever been misinterpreted, misunderstood or seen by someone as a person you believe yourself not to be? The prophet Joel whom we hear today portrays a people who feel misunderstood.

Words and the Transfiguration

March 2, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

How do I know when God is speaking to me? How do I know when I am hearing the voice of God? I bring it up, because I am asked that question a lot. I also bring it up because we hear God speak in the Gospel this morning. “This is my son, the beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

The Holy and The Human

February 23, 2014, The Rev. Kate Wesch & The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

In The Saint John’s Bible, on the second page showing Leviticus 19, there is a little bird in the margin. It has a rope in its talons running down the side of the text and at the bottom it is attached to a box of text. The bird’s beak points to the place above where the text should be inserted. This is one of my favorite things about this work of art. It is holy and yet, it is human like we are.

Stressed Out

February 16, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

So here it is: Choose life, not stress. Choose God first and not the body, and stress will fall away, and the body will still be OK. Learn something about God by heart and make space for your soul to breathe. This is intentional evolution beyond the biology of fight and flight. This is the express train to the Promise Land and it is what I hope for our children and our children’s children. It is what we can pass onto them, if we possess it ourselves.

Evensong

February 9, 2014, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

It has been said that the service of Evensong has brought more of humankind to the church than any other form of worship. In its finest state, Evensong is a significant jewel in the crown of liturgical worship.

The Light Behind the Light

February 9, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

It doesn’t matter who you are standing next to, the backlight is the backlight is the backlight. And here is the take away: when we focus on the backlight as the thing itself judgment falls away and joy wins the day. It’s worth pondering if you feel like you have more judgment in your life than joy.

The Presentation

February 2, 2014, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

And now, I rejoin you from the pulpit on a day in which we acknowledge and remember the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple. Our family; myself, my husband, and our 3 year old daughter, have welcomed a new baby boy into our midst. Myles is his name and he likes to smile, bringing upon himself obvious nicknames.
