How to Receive Gifts

July 13, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

Today’s sermon is about gifts and how we receive them. We might think it is easy. “Yeah, thanks for the gift.” And maybe it is, but I can’t help wondering: with so much universal access to whatever we want, whenever we want it, the way we want it, have we lost sight of the blessing of how to receive a gift and the way in which gifts magnify our souls?

The Soul in Suffering

June 29, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

The Soundness of Souls

Pentecost: The Church Becomes a Shame-Free Zone

June 8, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

This week’s sermon is on Pentecost. The text is from Acts 2, when Peter gives his first sermon in Jerusalem after the Holy Spirit empowers the disciples. “Today I’d like to suggest that Epiphany can be a Shame-Free Zone.”

Entanglement

May 25, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

This week’s sermon is on entanglement. The text is First Peter, and the theme of entanglement is drawn directly from the fact that this text is a tangled mess. I’ll tell you more about that later.

Come to God a Living Stone

May 18, 2014, The Rev. Doyt Conn preaching

“Come to God a living stone.” That is the title of my sermon this morning. It’s not too original given the reading from first Peter today. But I’m drawn to it, maybe because I have a bowl of stones sitting on my desk at home. Occasionally when I’m somewhere else I pick up a stone, bring it home, and put it in the bowl.

Community Christian

May 11, 2014, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

Being a Christian is all about community. It is about living your life the way Jesus would live it if he were you. And I believe that means praying for the girls in Nigeria, praying for their loved ones, and praying for their captors. It means writing or calling lawmakers. It means recognizing injustices in this world both abroad and in our very own backyard and having the courage to speak out. What today’s reading from Acts is talking about is this, living in Christian community.
