Harrowing Of Hell

Evening Prayer: Pilgrimage as Spiritual Discipline

March 2, 2016, Diana Bender preaching

Whenever I start to think I know better, practicing the spiritual disciplines pulls me back, whether it’s praying Hour by Hour, worshipping every Sunday or going on pilgrimage. Together the spiritual disciplines reorient me to a deeper reality. They open me up to grace and to the action of the Holy Spirit in a way that is often powerful and helpful, and sometimes (like with the pilgrimage) even transformational.

Love and Judgment

February 28, 2016, The Rev. Doyt L. Conn, Jr. preaching

Jesus came to give us the kingdom of God, and in the kingdom of God, love and judgment are partners. As the Psalmist writes: “I will sing of your love and judgment, O Lord” (Psalm 101:1). In a world organized by squishy love without judgment people turn into spoiled brats. Love alone is not enough. God’s love is unlimited. Ours is limited. God’s judgment is equitable. Ours is mostly uninformed.

The Restoration of Our Church: Resonance

February 21, 2016, The Rev. Doyt L. Conn, Jr., preaching.

In the first service back in the church, Doyt talked about how the walls resonate with our stories and the breath of God.

Whom Are We Inviting to the Party?

February 14, 2016, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

When you have a party, he tells them, you don’t just invite your family and wealthy friends who will return the invitation. You, invite those who are different from you, “the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind” to quote the text. That’s the kind of party Brigid would have thrown for sure!

Ashes: Let Us Be Marked

February 10, 2016, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

And so, this day, this first day of Lent, we are marked as a sign of our mortal nature, a reminder that we are stardust. This is an act and a reminder of this season of penitence, of fasting, and self-examination. It is an echo of our baptism, and a foreshadowing of last rites.

Transfiguration

February 7, 2016, The Rev. Kate Wesch preaching

What weighs you down? And are you paying attention? Or, are you sleepwalking?

Jesus’ Pivot Point

January 31, 2016, The Rev. Doyt L. Conn, Jr., preaching

Just like Stephen Curry, Jesus stops, pivots, and changes the play. His hometown is not amused.

It’s Still Christmas

January 3, 2016, Holly Boone preaching

But today is still Christmas. We can look upon the infant in the manger and imagine our own newborn souls lying there. There is a whole new year before us to nurture and care for our baby souls. Stick around Epiphany very long and you will learn that here is a community devoted to the raising and training of souls, yours and mine and each others’. It’s still Christmas.
