Last Sunday after the Epiphany: Sermon Summary and Reflection Questions

Kate’s sermon calls us to pay attention to the mysterious moments in life when God feels close—what she lovingly calls “woo-woo moments.” These are the times when something stirs deep in our souls, beyond words, like the disciples experienced at the Transfiguration. She reminds us that mountains have always been special places to meet God, thin spaces where heaven and earth feel close together. Kate shares her own “woo-woo moment” on Mt. Rainier, where the beauty of snow, sky, and silence overwhelmed her, making her feel small but completely held by God. These moments remind us that God is always near, even when life feels heavy and we’re too tired to notice.

As we approach Lent, Kate invites us to slow down and create space for God in our lives. Lent is a time to pause, reflect, and prepare our souls to see God working in both big and small ways. Kate reminds us that prayer and quiet rhythms help us notice God, like Simeon and Anna in the temple or the disciples on the mountain. Each phase of life—whether we’re learning, building, sharing, or letting go—offers a chance to draw close to God. She encourages us to think about how we’re preparing our hearts during this season. Lent is a gift, a time to open ourselves to God’s presence and grow closer to Him.

Reflection Questions for this Week:

  1. Have you ever had a moment where you felt God’s presence in a deep or unexplainable way? What was it like, and how did it shape your faith?

  2. Do you find it hard to notice God when you’re tired or busy? What practices could help you stay open to God’s presence?

  3. As you think about your current stage of life, how might it affect the way you connect with God? How can you prepare your soul to notice God more?
